These lands of the Persian-speaking Tajik people have been continuously inhabited for over 6,000 years and were once part of the Samanid Empire. The country’s treacherous peaks and dizzying altitude passes weren’t enough to keep outsiders at bay, having been subject to invasions from Ghengis Khan to the Soviets, as well as a divesting civil war. Today Tajikistan is Central Asia’s least visited destination providing a pristine canvas, untouched by tourism and development.

The Hissar Fortress, one of Tajikistan's most renowned historical landmarks, dates back approximately 3,000 years. Spanning an area of 86 hectares, this impressive architectural monument now serves as an open-air museum, located just 30 km from Dushanbe.
Although much of the original structure has been lost to time, notable elements from the 16th–19th centuries remain. These include the cylindrical towers and the main gate, with its pointed arch, constructed under the Emir of Bukhara. Built of baked brick, the fortress features 1-meter-thick walls with loopholes for guns and cannons. Its design embodies the austere military architecture of the Bukhara Emirate, with watchtowers and shooting platforms for defense.
Inside the fortress, the governor’s palace once stood alongside a swimming pool and a vast garden. Adjacent to the fortress, a bustling marketplace thrived, featuring a caravanserai and shopping malls. Over the centuries, two madrassas and the Mausoleum of Makhdumi Azam ("The Greatest Lord") were added to the site. According to legend, the citadel was built by Afrosiyob to defend against Rustam, both heroic figures from the epic poem "Shahnameh" by Ferdowsi.
